The Thought.......

Sunrise on Loch Lomond

This photograph is part of series of photographs I took of Loch Lomond in Scotland. The first few photographs show the sun rising from behind the mountains, making the scene look on fire.

The boat and part of the mountains are in silhouette creating a very moody and a clam atmosphere in the scene. This emphasises the scale and the light falling on the Loch and the boat. I used a tripod and colours of the final image were edited in photoshop.

Photography talk

Sunrise Loch Lomond, Scotland

The photograph below was taken early in the morning before sunrise by Loch Lomond, Scotland.
I liked the pastel colours in the scene. The colours in the water and the soft reflection of the boat were two main key points that caught my attention.

I set the camera on Manual mode and used a tripod.

Camera settings:
f-stop: f22
exposure: 4 seconds
ISO: 100

No major editing was done to this image, I slightly enhanced the colours.

Tip of the week

Tip of the week - 4th March

Pre-dawn (before Sunrise)

Before sunrise the light reflected from the sky hitting the scene is very soft and diffused, which means the shadows are very weak. Therefore the colour of the sky will be blue on clear days and grey on cloudy days, such lighting conditions can create very atmospheric photographs.

  • use aperture mode
  • cameras which do not have the Aperture Priority use scene settings, such as ‘dusk/dawn’, ‘nightlight’ or ‘sunset’ modes (experiment which of these modes works best for your image).
  • use a tripod to avoid camera shake as exposure will be long

Settings for the image below:

f5
ISO 100
exposure: 1/90 sec

Low Light and Night Photography

Taking photographs in low light conditions can be very exciting and creative. Here are 2 important things to keep in mind: -

1) The time of the day:
  • Before sunrise (pre-dawn)
  • Sunset
  •  After sunset (twilight & total darkness)

2) Camera settings: use Aperture mode on the camera

F-stop f5
Exposure time 1/90
ISO 100
